Attachment

Kamti ani lif’toach l’dodi

I will open to You, my Beloved; will You open to me?

—from the Song of Songs

We come

into the
world

literally attached,

and within
seconds,

we begin the
journey

of learning
to attach anew,

to anchor
ourselves differently.

Let me go;

welcome me home.

Where is that familiar smell?

Oneness,
separateness,

seeing you–
seeing myself,

coming
close–stepping back.

You are with
me

when you are
not with me.

closeness, trust, reliance

My stomach
flutters and swirls;

love, fear, safety

Am I willing

to open
myself up

(to the
possibility of losing you)?

surrender, willingness, connection

It’s a
skydiving act, this attachment thing.

Flow, free fall, faith

I’m reaching
for my pully-cord;

Open,
parachute, open.

Catch me.
