The Lesson of Lovingkindness

Elul 23

This week I have been listening again to Sharon Salzberg's meditation CD about Lovingkindness, and it has been a gentle yet forceful reminder about continually relearning the practice of lovingkindness.

Metta, chesed, whatever you want to call it, we humans can be astonishlingly stubborn. Just when you think you've mastered something, you are brought back to beginner's mind, to humility, to awe–sometimes willingly, other times reluctantly.

As Elul winds down, today I am thinking about how to practice lovingkindness in relationship to our bodies, our health, our physical well-being. What would it feel like to extend compassion to our knotty, bumpy, imperfect bodies?
