The Wisdom of the Student

Creative Spirituality

Over fifteen years ago, I was teaching an Introduction to Spiritual Guidance class with Robert Frager, and we asked our students in the very first class to write their definition of spiritual guidance/spiritual direction. I’m still in awe of the beauty of their words, their dreams, their callings. The nuances and variety in these definitions highlight the importance of finding the right fit for you in the person whom you are inviting to accompany you on your spiritual journey. Below are some of these definitions:

Spiritual Guidance is…
A place to welcome a soul or another divine person in friendship for a connection regarding spiritual self reflection.

Helping one to find their personal journey to who they REALLY are and who they are meant to be; to find their personal Divine and their definition of how that Divine lives within their heart and being.

The joining and restructuring of the image of the Soul (or God-image) between guider & guided.

Helping others see the light they have so that they can see the light in the world.

The intention and act of creating a space of loving presence, both physical and emotional, that allows for the spontaneous voice of the deep and unknown to speak, unhindered.

Creating a welcoming, safe space that lifts up and lightens the guided, as well as the guiding. And a Spiritual Guide is a person dedicated to acting as a vessel of progressive spiritual transport for the spiritually and religiously questioning and journeying.

Providing individual, family, group with space and time to review and consider the connection with the divine.

An integral approach to helping people to find their spiritual path (for those who seek it) and to advance along that path (for those who are on that path already).

The practice of holding space for another to come into a greater/deeper relationship with the Divine Mystery within themselves.

It is a practice of honoring and being a witness for the seeker on their journey toward wholeness and their own fulfilling relationship with Grace.
